Resources for Solar Energy in Alberta

At XSolar Installations Co., we believe that informed decisions lead to better investments in your future. Below, you’ll find a collection of resources to guide you through the process of switching to solar energy, from understanding costs to taking advantage of government programs

Costs of Solar Panel Installation

Residential Systems:

• Average cost: $10,000–$40,000

• Cost per watt: $2.50–$3.50 (depending on system size and complexity)

• Payback period: 8–12 years, depending on energy usage and rebates.

Tip: Solar systems increase property value and reduce monthly energy bills, making them a worthwhile investment.

Government Rebates and Incentives

Save thousands with government programs designed to support renewable energy adoption. Here are the top rebates and incentives in Alberta:

Canada Greener Homes Grant

• Up to $5,000 for solar panel installation.

• Up to $600 for a home energy evaluation.

Alberta Municipal Solar Program (AMSP)

• Incentives for municipalities investing in solar energy projects.

Canada Greener Homes Loan

• Interest-free loans of up to $40,000 for solar and energy-efficient upgrades.

How to Apply: Contact us for guidance on accessing these rebates and completing required paperwork.

Government Grants

Explore grant opportunities that make solar energy more affordable:

Energy Efficiency Alberta Grant (EEA):

For residents and businesses installing solar systems.

Clean Energy Innovation Programs:

Grants for businesses looking to adopt innovative renewable energy solutions.

Alberta Indigenous Solar Program (AISP):

Supporting solar projects in Indigenous communities.

In Calgary, homeowners who generate surplus electricity through micro-generation systems, such as solar panels, can export this excess energy back to the grid. ENMAX compensates these homeowners through a process known as net billing.

Compensation Rates:

Small Micro-Generators (up to 150 kW): ENMAX credits the exported electricity at the homeowner’s retail energy rate. This means if your retail rate is, for example, 8 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), you’ll receive an 8-cent credit for each kWh exported.

Large Micro-Generators (150 kW to 5 MW): Excess electricity is credited at the average hourly Alberta Pool Price, which fluctuates based on market conditions.

Additional Considerations:

Monthly Credits: Surplus energy credits are applied monthly to offset your electricity bill. If you generate more credits than your consumption over a 12-month period, ENMAX will compensate you for the unused credits annually.

Fixed Charges: While energy generation can reduce your consumption charges, fixed costs like distribution, transmission, and other fees will still apply, as these are necessary for maintaining grid connectivity.

Example:

If you’re a small micro-generator with a retail rate of 8 cents/kWh and you export 100 kWh back to the grid in a month, you’d receive an $8 credit on your electricity bill for that month.

For the most accurate and current information, it’s advisable to review your specific energy plan details or contact ENMAX directly, as rates and policies can change over time.
